PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

John J. Stockdale, Jr. practices in the areas of debtor-creditor law and business transactions. John has represented clients in personal and business bankruptcies, the collection of debt, the formation of businesses, municipal contracts, and the sale and licensing of businesses’, business property, and real property.

John graduated Summa Cum Laude from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2007 with a business transaction concentration, where he earned thirteen Certificates of Merit (“CM”), including CMs in Bankruptcy, Business Organizations, Securities Regulation, Torts I and II, and Business Tax. While at Cooley, John served as an associate editor to the Law Review; participated in the moot court competition; and earned the President’s Award, the Distinguished Student Award, and several other law school honors. John also earned the Association of Corporate Counsel scholarship in 2007 as well as the Edward H. Rakow Award in business and securities law from the Eastern District of Michigan Federal Bar Association. John is also a 1992 graduate of The Citadel.

John has been a regular author on issues involving business appraisal and damages law to the National Association of Valuation Analysts and the American Society of Appraisers. John edited Business Valuation Resources’ Guide to Lost Profits Damages. Further, John published “Temple v. United States: More Negative Treatment for the Quantitative Marketability Discount Model” in the Michigan Tax Lawyer, Fall 2006.

John also regularly speaks on business appraisal issues before the Michigan Society of CPAs

REPRESENTATIVE MATTERS

John assisted a large chapter 11 debtor with formulating a plan of reorganization and sales procedures.

John obtained a chapter 7 discharge for a business owner with multiple financial statements and unusually high credit card debt.

John resolved a $750,000 claim for fraud in connection with the sale of business interests against a self-storage entrepreneur for $1,000.

John provided substantial assistance to a tool and die shop in a variety of matters including collection defense, collection, and Construction Lien Act actions.

John successfully represented a residential subdivision developer to avoid a several million dollar judgment through a deed in lieu of foreclosure transaction.

John successfully prosecuted collection actions resulting in monetary recoveries for an equipment lessor.

John regularly speaks before the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants on recent court decisions impacting business appraisal and the calculation of damages.

PUBLICATIONS

John edited Business Valuation Resource’s Guide to Lost Profits Damages and Guide to Canadian Valuation Law. John is a regular contributor to the Valuation Examiner and Business Valuation Review.
