Schafer and Weiner Prevails at Trial before the Unemployment Insurance Agency

August, 2022

John Stockdale, Jr., as pro bono counsel, represented an unemployment benefits claimant before an Unemployment Insurance Agency (“UIA”) administrative law judge (“ALJ”) regarding whether the claimant improperly received $13,000 in Michigan Unemployment Insurance Benefits (the “Benefits”) during the coronavirus shutdown and whether the claimant had to repay the Benefits to the UIA.  After a telephonic trial before the ALJ, which included the witness testimony and written evidence, the ALJ issued a written decision holding that the claimant was not required to repay the funds to the UIA even though the claimant was not entitled to benefits – A big win for the little guy!
